5 years after schools shuttered for COVID, Michigan students are still not the same

At Michigan State University, researchers with the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative (EPIC) have monitored student progress through assessment and other data from the very beginning of the pandemic. Now, five year’s after the beginning of the pandemic, their newest report highlights that:

Nearly 30% aren’t showing up to school consistently.

More than half of third graders in the 2023-24 school year scored below proficient in the state’s reading test.

And in the 2024-25 school year, public school enrollment is down by about 5.4% from the 2019-20 school year, according to state figures.
