Big City School Districts Buck CDC Reopening Guidance

A U.S. News analysis of the country’s 20 biggest school districts shows that the majority of systems are pushing new CDC guidance for reopenings to the max. A newly published working paper from researchers at Michigan State University who analyzed local district reopening plans and public opinion on reopening in Michigan found that partisanship was much more associated with district reopening plans than COVID-19 infection rates. Republicans were “far more favorable” than were Democrats toward in-person learning, they found, and states’ decisions to leave reopening plans to their districts opened the way for students’ experiences to be shaped by the flavor of partisanship in their local communities.
