A Research Report From EPIC

Examining Implementation of Talent Together: A Statewide Grow Your Own Initiative

September 2026

This report examines the early implementation of Talent Together, a statewide “Grow Your Own” program launched in 2023 to help address teacher shortages in Michigan. Drawing on 39 interviews with teacher candidates, program leaders, and partner organizations, the report outlines both successes and challenges from the program’s first two years. Candidates cited tuition coverage, flexible online coursework, and hands-on apprenticeship training as key supports, particularly for those balancing work and family responsibilities. It also documents challenges, including licensing exam pass rates, variation in support across districts and university partners, and uncertainty around long-term funding.

EPIC works with state and district partners to create a targeted research agenda to learn which reform strategies are most effective, where, when and for whom.
