Five elementary schools in District U-46 closed Tuesday because of COVID-related staff shortages

School District U-46 was forced to close five elementary schools and an early learning center Tuesday because of staff shortages caused by COVID-19 illnesses, Superintendent Tony Sanders said.

Across the district’s 57 schools, 525 staff called in sick for Tuesday, which was students’ first day back in class following winter break. Of the total number out, 394 were teachers, Sanders said.
