See where 3rd grade reading scores are highest, lowest in Michigan

Third grade reading scores are important because of Michigan’s new Read By Grade Three law, which says third-graders with an M-STEP reading score below 1252 – more than a grade level behind – are eligible to be held back. Students are considered “not proficient” if they score below a 1280. Nearly 6% of Michigan third-graders scored below a 1252 on the most recent test and are eligible to be retained, per Michigan State University.
