Michigan third graders held back over reading doubled last year, report says

Michigan schools retained more than twice as many students flagged for retention under the state’s Read by Grade Three Law in 2021-22 than it did the previous year. But that’s only 10% of students eligible to repeat the grade.
Of the 5,680 Michigan third-graders eligible for retention after testing below the state’s English language arts standards, districts held back only 545 – 9.6% – for the 2022-23 school year, representing 0.6% of the state’s third grade enrollment, a report from the Michigan State University Education Policy Innovation Collaborative shows.
