Students of color, ninth graders, more likely to be held back in school in Michigan

​The number of Michigan students held back a grade in school has rebounded to pre-COVID-19 levels after plunging during the first year of the pandemic, new state data shows. Black and Latino students continue to be held back at higher rates than white students, one of many disparities in public education that disproportionately affect students of color, according to the MI School Data report released in March. It shows 6% of all ninth graders were held back this year, a rate higher than all other grades except kindergarten, where 13% were held back.
