Michigan’s Teacher Shortage: Initial Report

Prepared for Michigan’s P-20 Longitudinal Data System Advisory Council

April 2022

Tara Kilbride, EPIC’s Assistant Director for Research, presented findings from their initial report of Michigan’s Teacher Shortage Study. As state and local policymakers consider how to grow the supply of teachers and attract and retain teachers in their districts and in the state, it is critical that they are able to understand the scope of the shortage to guide actions that ensure schools and districts are fully staffed to best support their students. This initial report provided an overview of existing state data, as well as baseline analyses of reported teacher vacancies, teacher retention rates, and enrollment in and completion from approved Michigan teacher preparation programs over the past decade.

EPIC works with state and district partners to create a targeted research agenda to learn which reform strategies are most effective, where, when and for whom.
