Does Michigan have K-12 staff problem? State officials don’t know how many jobs are vacant

The single greatest issue facing Michigan’s K-12 schools is a shortage of teachers, according to state Superintendent Michael Rice, yet neither he nor anyone else can put an exact number on how many unfilled jobs currently exist. That’s because Michigan’s 835 local school districts are not required to report vacancies when they happen. Districts are required to file data on staffing twice a year while teachers and support staff retire, take jobs in other districts or leave their professions year around.
