Michigan schools face financial pressure to open classrooms as COVID cases rise

A spike in COVID-19 outbreaks inside K-12 schools is happening just as many Michigan districts are opening their doors five days a week for the first time during the pandemic in an effort to qualify for millions of dollars in COVID-19 relief funds. But as school-related cases rise, some districts, including Royal Oak and Berkley, are moving to offer full-time, four- and five-day-a-week in-person learning to students after they learned federal COVID relief funds were tied to providing at least 20 hours a week of face-to-face learning to all students by Monday.
