School districts in Oakland County support third-grade retention repeal

A long-sought-after Democratic bill to repeal Michigan’s controversial third-grade reading law passed the state House on Tuesday, moving the legislation to Gov. Whitmer’s desk for her signature.
SB 12 passed 57-51 in the House, and last month it passed in the Senate by a 22-16 margin.
The Read by Grade Three law, enacted in 2016, requires schools to hold back third graders who test more than one grade level behind in reading.
The law allows several exemptions that have led to few students actually being held back, but Democrats want to repeal the retention portion of the law.
